A Celebration of Love - Robert & Tamika

Tamika and Robert were a joy to work with! I introduced Tamika & Robert to you a few months ago by sharing a few of their engagement photos. These two love birds exchanged their marriage vows at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. A "Modern Chic Cocktail" brunch reception was the plan for these two and they accomplished this by having their reception at The Place Martini Bar. The color palette for the couple's soiree included black, white, and green. Black and white damask was incorporated into their wedding design as well! All of these elements together gave the wedding a classic old Hollywood Glamour feel.

I have had the great pleasure of working with April the past few months and we have had a great time talking and preparing for her and Terrell’s bid day!

I like to share my clients love stories and proposals because I’m a hopeless romantic and love when there’s some creativity shown as well as their love for each other.

Here it is…the love story and proposal of April & Terrell…

Our Love Story

One night while hanging out at my sister’s job, I struck up a conversation with an insightful bartender named Kriss. Later that night Kriss called my sister and asked for my number. I was a little upset behind this request because I knew that Kriss had a girlfriend and thought he was trying to pull a fast one! ;-) But as it turned out, he wanted to my number for a friend of his. Well, I got ready to give him my “I-don’t-do-blind-dates” spiel, but decided to give him my number anyway. What the heck- I was new in town and hey, it was a free meal! Lol! Anyway, that was on a Wednesday and Terrell called me that Friday afternoon. Of course I had to play hard-to-get, so I called him back on Saturday. He was about to leave town, but promised to call me the next day when he arrived back in Nashville.

The next day he called and Terrell and I talked, and talked, and talked all day that Sunday. We talked from afternoon until around 9 p.m., took a break to eat, and then talked well into the early hours. Although I did not know him at all, I felt as if I had known Terrell for years. Talking to him felt so natural and I wanted to tell him everything about me. No secrets, pretensions, or guards- just me as I am. We went on our first date the following Friday at the Firefly Grille in Green Hills, which is where he proposed to me last November.

The Proposal

Now, I should have realized something was up on the night he asked me to marry him. Terrell was not eating his food, looking nervous, and just acting “off”. After dinner, he told me that he’d ordered dessert, which was strange because we NEVER ate dessert when we went out… plus he hardly ate his dinner. The waiter brought over the dessert and said “Would you like me to cut this Miss?” I said “Sure”, without looking at him, and kept talking to Terrell. Then the waiter asks me again, so I said “Sure” again…but this time I looked up at him. That’s when I noticed that he was looking back and forth from me to the cake gesturing for me to look at this ‘special’ dessert. So I did, and noticed it had some writing on it. As I looked at the cake to see what was so special about this dessert I started to read the words on the cake slowly. Hmmm…Will… you… marry… me—WILL YOU MARRY ME?!?!?!? “OF COURSE!!” I started crying and then Terrell got on one knee and asked me to be his wife. Naturally I said “YES!!!” …and the rest is to be continued until 07/31/09!

While planning the details of your wedding, don’t hesitate to have FUN with it! You do it in the car, the shower, anywhere the beat hits you! You are the best dancer you know during those time…so why not share your skills with the rest of us! This is a great addition to your reception and your gets will love it!

D.I.Y. Project - Teardrop Luminaries

I found this D.I.Y project on The Wedding Cabaret (via Candletech). This will be a great addition to anyone's reception or event!

What You’ll Need:

High Melt Parrafin Wax

Water Balloons

Double Boiler

Cookie Sheet

Instructions:

1. Fill a water balloon with tepid water.

2. Melt your wax. Optimum working temperature for this project is 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Try to maintain this temperature for your wax while working by keeping it on a double boiler.

3. Slowly dip your balloon into the wax to just below the water level in the balloon. Warning: Do not dip the balloon into the wax past the water level. This could cause the balloon to pop.

4. Hold the balloon in the wax for a few seconds, and then slowly lift it out of the wax. Dip the balloon a few more times, allowing some time between dips to let the wax cool.

5. While it is still quite warm, carefully set the balloon down onto a piece of paper or a cookie sheet, making sure it is level. This will create a flat bottom for the luminary.

6. Dip your balloon a few more times until it is the desired thickness. A good target thickness is 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch.

7. Set the balloon on the paper or cookie sheet again and let it cool.

8. When the wax is completely cooled, hold the balloon over a sink or bucket, facing away from you. Carefully pop the balloon with a skewer or knife and let the water drain out. Throw away the balloon shards.

9. To level the top of the luminary, heat a cookie sheet on the stove and place the luminary top-down onto the hot sheet and carefully melt the edges until it is level.

10. Place a tea light or votive candle inside the luminary and burn on a candle holder in a dark area.

Sounds easy! Can't wait to try this one out!

D.I.Y Wedding Projects! Friend or Foe?

In today's economy more bride's are challenging themselves by taking on D.I.Y wedding projects to help cut some of the costs of their big day. I myslef love D.I.Y projects and I know the ups and downs of them and if you are not 'crafty' some of them can be overwhelming. This week I will introduce some D.I.Y wedding projects that I've found online and take the challenge of making them myself and share the ups and downs with you! In addition to some of the projects, I will also find 'inspiration' photos and try to make them D.I.Y projects!

The first project that I would like to share with you was found on "Do It Yourself Weddings". This project was submitted by Brandi, a "Do It Yourself Weddings" readers.

"Cheap Glamorous Centerpiece"

1) Spray paint the bottom of a clay pot black, or whatever color you choose. Once dry paint the top rim a difference color.

2) Collect branches to put in your pots. I just cut branches from a tree in our yard and used one large branch per pot.

3) Fill the pot with rocks to help secure the tree branch.

4) Create the toilet paper ornaments by cutting a swatch that will cover the toilet paper roll. Don't worry about getting all the way to the top and bottom because your accessories will cover it up. Once you have glued the fabric to the roll, punch two small holes in the top of the roll, one of each side and then thread wire or string through the holes as a way to hang it. Finally, glue beads to the bottom and add a small boa to the top - or whatever trimming accessories you choose. (fringe, ribbon, etc)
5) Collect gems with holes in the top to hang from the branches. You can find gems at Michaels and other craft or bead stores. Then thread with clear string or wire and hang from the branches.

6) Glue orchids randomly on the branches and finally, cover the top of the pot with flowers or moss to cover the rocks.

Blair's work is impeccable and she's very passionate about her work and it shows! Her last project for me was using a gocco to add my clients monogram on napkins for their reception. I love personalization and this was another way for me to add another special touch to their reception!

My topic today is about “Finding your style and have fun with it!” Yes, you can have fun while planning your wedding! Our Love Story…
Robert and I met almost a decade ago at a clothing store he owned. My college roommate worked for him and I would occasionally stop by to visit her. He and I became fast friends and kept in touch through mutual friends. I eventually moved back to my hometown of Atlanta and we kept in touch less frequently. It wasn't until several years had passed, that while visiting Atlanta on business, we reconnected over dinner. Sparks flew instantly! It was at that precise moment that we realized we were more than friends!

The Proposal…
On a beautiful Saturday evening, Robert took me to different places in Nashville with special meaning to us. A fabulous restaurant on a marina that we have enjoyed since we met; a parking garage with the most perfect views of the downtown skyline; the location of our first kiss, and our favorite place to have a cocktail! It wasn't until the night concluded that he pulled the car over, swung open my car door and got down on one knee.

Did you not just put your hand over your heart and sigh!

I totally did! ;-)

Over the past few years we’ve seen the candy buffet/bar appear more and more at wedding receptions. I love the idea of personalizing different elements of the wedding and reception around the bride and groom and I think a candy bar is a wonderful way of doing just that!

Another important decision in the wedding planning process is selecting your photographer. It is very…very important to be careful when selecting your photographer. You only have one shot at this and you can’t go back and take your wedding pictures over again. Your wedding photos will last forever and you want to make sure that your day is captured in the best way possible. Your happiness will depend on finding someone who can capture your wedding day in a way that you want to remember it. The sentiment, intimate moments shared between you and your new spouse, and not to mention the fun shots! As a wedding planner I’ve seen it all when it comes to wedding photos…trust me! And selecting the right photographer is priceless!

Here are a few tips on selecting ‘the’ photographer for you!

Style – No two photographers are alike. Photography is an art and your photographers are artists in their own right. Make sure you do your research when selecting your photographer. Attend wedding shows, browse the internet, and ask friends and family for referrals. View different photographers portfolios to determine which style appeals to you most and that should help narrow down your search.

Pricing – If you heard this once you’ve heard it a thousand times…”You get what you pay for.” Photographers can get a little expensive, but in the long run it’s worth it. Do not get excited because you found someone that was cheap…because that’s exactly what you are going to get. Remember…these are your wedding photos and these portraits will be passed on for generations to come and don’t you want your children and grandchildren to look at your pictures and be in awe at how good you looked on that day and feel the love that you two shared!

Expertise – Make sure that your photographer is experienced and shows you his work from several weddings. Make sure that he or she has experience and knows what they are doing. Ask for referrals in you need to…remember this is your wedding day and you should be able to trust your vendors.

Compatibility - This is just as important as your photographer style. You will be spending the majority of the day with your photographer. You want to feel relaxed with them and feel comfortable enough that you can express yourself without and pressures. Another thing that you need to avoid is photographers that will talk to you up until the day of your wedding and then send someone else to photograph your day. Make sure that whoever you initially talked with and feel secure with is the one that will be taking your wedding photos.

After you’ve selected your photographer make sure that you make a list of every shot that you want and make sure that you give this information to your photographer. This will ensure that you get the special shots that you want and if you have a great photographer it will be better than you imagined!

"The" Dress...

Now that you are officially engaged…I know that you can’t wait to start the process of selecting your wedding dress! Choosing your wedding day attire is one of the most important decisions in your wedding planning process. Your gown should reflect your personality, style, and taste. Trying on various gowns in different styles is recommended and this will help you decide what style works best for you. When selecting your gown, you’ll want to make sure that timeless elegance is a key factor in your decision. You want to be able to look at your wedding pictures 10 years from now and still be as beautiful to you as you were on your special day.

Deciding on a silhouette is important as well. You want to select a gown that best compliments your figure. Do your research and know what you are looking for or at least want to try.

Here are a few explanations of the different gown types for your figure…

Ball gowns have very full skirts and generally will look beautiful on any body type, unless the bride is very short and small. In this case, it may be overwhelming to her small frame. Ball gowns generally either have crinolines built in or a slip you must wear to support the shape of the gown. Be advised that this extra fabric can be heavy and bulky and will require extra care to wear.

A-lines usually have a fitted bodice with a skirt that flares gently from the waist to form an "A" shape. They generally work for everyone as well, and are a terrific choice for someone who would like to hide lower body flaws, but does not want a ball gown. A-lines are not as full as ball gowns.

Sheaths flatter women with slim, balanced figures. They shouldn't be worn by brides who dislike their figures. This gown will not hide any flaws. If you think your thighs or butt are too big, you'll be miserable in this type of dress. Don't try to pull it off because you found a gown you love in this style. You don't want to risk being uncomfortable or self conscious on your wedding day, or regretting your choice every time you look at wedding photos.

Empire waist gowns have a skirt that falls from just below the breasts. Although usually listed with various waistline types and not always considered a type of silhouette, they are a wonderful choice for a casual, non-formal wedding, or weddings in a tropical climate. They're usually made of light, flowing fabric. They're also excellent for pregnant brides, because they provide extra room in the waist, making them a comfortable choice. They also won't draw as much attention to the belly as a dress with a lower waistline would.

Valentine’s Day is known to bring out the hopeless romantics in us all and with that comes PROPOSALS! After Saturday…I’m sure there are some congratulations in order!

CONGRATULATIONS on your engagement!

Now that you have the love of your life AND the ring it’s time to begin the process of one of the most important days of your lives together! Here are a few suggestions to help you get the ball rolling!

SET YOUR DATE!! When setting your date consider favorite time of year, convenience for you and guests (especially if the majority of your guests will have to travel), vacation availability, city/state location, an idea of where you want the wedding to take place, and sentimental dates as well.

After you’ve decided on your date you can now determine the level of formality of the wedding you desire (Example…formal or themed), the wedding party, your guest list, and your budget. When setting your budget make sure you are including all contributing parties with having this discussion.

Once you completed this step it’s time to start finding your wedding vendors. Make sure you surround yourself with experienced professionals to insure your day will be its best AND stress free! A wedding planner/coordinator should be your first stop!

I’ve always loved the different possibilities when it comes to bridal fashion. I’m working with a bride right now that wants to wear a bird cage veil instead of the traditional veil/ blusher. There was a bride on www.AshelysBrideGuide.com and few weeks ago that wore one and she looked beautiful! I thought her look was very chic and timeless!

During these difficult economic times some of these veils can get a little expensive. I did a search on www.etsy.com (one of my favorites!) and found a vast selection of affordable veils in different colors and with different accessories! Here are a few that I thought would add the perfect touch to any diva bride!
